Anna Hull of Manassas Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip

2015 Mar 24

Manassas, VA resident Anna Hull spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Hull traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to volunteer with Catholic Charities and Lost Boys of Sudan.

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 7-14. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 300 students embarked on 23 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

Students worked with the Lost Boys of Sudan and Catholic Charities to advocate for genocide and refugee awareness. Since 1983, the Sudan people's liberation party and the Sudanese government have been at war in Southern Sudan. Over 500,000 lives have been lost with at least 20,000 children displaced from their homes and separated from their families. The Arizona Lost Boys Center works to assist newly resettled males from Sudan. The center works to provide education, employment opportunities and help acclimate the Lost Boys to the culture around them. JMU students made welcome baskets to bring to the Lost Boys center, and using their skills as communication majors, identified with the Lost Boys and listened to their stories.
