Anne Custer of Midlothian participates in Alternative Spring Break trip

Midlothian, VA resident Anne Custer spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Custer, a Dietetics major, scheduled to graduate in 2016, traveled to Winter Park, FL to volunteer with Operation Help or Hush (CMSS).

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 5-12. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 250 students embarked on 25 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

This break is co-sponsored with the Center for Multicultural Student Services office here on campus, meaning it has an enhanced focus on diversity and culture. Students worked with Heart of Florida United Way focusing on the issues of hunger and homelessness. United Way is an umbrella organization connecting volunteers to local nonprofits. They traveled to Winter Park, FL to work with two agencies that work with these populations.They also incorporated cultural activities throughout the week.
