Chelsi Posey of Nokesville, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Chelsi Posey of Nokesville spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Posey, a sophomore health science major, traveled to Lakeland, Fla. to volunteer at East Coast Migrant Head Start.

The JMU team traveled to Lakeland, Fla. to work with the largest Migrant Head Start Program in the country. Like most Head Start programs, the goal is to provide a holistic approach to school readiness for young children ages six weeks to six years. This agency is different than other Head Start Programs because the children's parents are migrant and seasonal workers who live very transient, mobile lifestyles.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
