Courtney Clemmons of Richmond, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Courtney Clemmons of Richmond spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Clemmons, a junior social work major, traveled to Paix Bouche, Dominica to volunteer at Paix Bouche Community Council.

Students from JMU’s Social Work department studied the culture and formulation of social policy and methods of social work and human services practices in Dominica. Students worked in a service capacity with Dominican human services professions. The students also became immersed in the culture of Dominica and contributed a service project to the village of Paix Bouche.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
