Darci Law of Arlington participates in Alternative Spring Break trip

2016 Mar 15

Arlington, VA resident Darci Law spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Law, a Public Policy & Administration major, scheduled to graduate in 2018, traveled to Bristol, FL to volunteer with Nature's Conservancy.

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 5-12. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 250 students embarked on 25 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

Students worked together doing environmental restoration and preservation with Nature's Conservancy in Bristol Florida. They spent the week camping in one of the rarest habitats on Earth, located in Apalachicola park! They learned about the unique and diverse plant-life and ecosystems, while spending long days digging and planting wiregrass and longleaf pines; two species which are vital to the restoration of this habitat. During their weekthey embraced the lifestyle of consciencious living in this new and wild habitat. Together they hoped to serve this community, as well as create community amongst our group.
