Devin Joseph of Haymarket Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip

2014 Apr 14

Haymarket, VA resident Devin Joseph spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Joseph, a junior biology major traveled to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to volunteer with Entre Mundos.

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 8-15. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

Entremundos is a grassroots organization committed to enhancing the effectiveness of small and medium-sized development and human rights organizations. The group immersed themselves in the culture of Quetzaltenango and participated in community wellness projects such as constructing stoves, chicken coops and kitchens. Students also created educational and recreational programs for children, painted schools, repaired classrooms, worked in the gardens and cooked for beneficiaries of a food support program.
