Devin Joseph of Haymarket Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip

2015 Mar 24

Haymarket, VA resident Devin Joseph spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Joseph, a seniorBiology major, traveled to Luperón, Dominican Republic to volunteer with Village Mountain Mission.

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 7-14. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 300 students embarked on 23 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

JMU students on the trip focused primarily on community wellness by building houses and restoring communities in Luperón, Dominican Republic. They lived simply and worked alongside Village Mountain Mission Project, a non-profit organization that builds homes for community members. On this trip, they served families unable to have their basic needs met, immersing themselves in a lively culture while making a difference in the lives of others.
