Emily Fox of Mechanicsville, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Emily Fox of Mechanicsville spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Fox, a senior modern foreign languages and sociology major, traveled to Atlanta, Ga. to volunteer at Medici Project.

The Medici Project works with at-risk urban youth. While in Atlanta the students provided social, emotional and educational support to kids in need. Students provided after-school tutoring, teacher aid, community clean-ups and recreational activities. The group lived in the heart of Atlanta for the week and got to explore the city and surrounding sites.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
