Frederick Carranza of Culpeper Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip

2015 Mar 24

Culpeper, VA resident Frederick Carranza spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Carranza, a seniorKinesiology major, traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to volunteer with Medici Project.

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 7-14. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 300 students embarked on 23 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

Sex trafficking continues to be the third largest international crime committed and it is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands who are currently being exploited in the U.S. JMU students on this trip worked with the Medici Project to further explore the varying factors of prevention and treating those stuck in the sex trafficking system. They worked alongside community members at free medical clinics, women’s shelters, homeless shelters and other organizations in Atlanta.
