Frederick Carranza of Culpeper, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Frederick Carranza of Culpeper spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Carranza, a junior kinesiology major, traveled to Rockaway, N.Y. to volunteer at Hurricane Sandy Relief .

This is JMU’s second mystery trip, where students signed up for ASB not knowing where they would be volunteering until they left for the trip. The students spent the week working as “mold slayers” for Respond and Rebuild, a nonprofit helping to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The students, outfitted in tyvec suits, air masks and goggles, knocked down unneeded wooden structures, scrubbed the wood for mold, vacuumed dust and cleaning the wood with a solution.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
