Jacqueline Wooldridge of Woodbridge Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip

2015 Mar 24

Woodbridge, VA resident Jacqueline Wooldridge spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Wooldridge, a sophomore Nursing major, traveled to Montego Bay, Jamaica to volunteer with Committee for Upliftment of Mentally Ill (CUMI).

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 7-14. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 300 students embarked on 23 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill serves the homeless population and people with disabilities. CUMI provides assistance in rehabilitation and empowerment services for people wanting to assimilate back into society. During their week in Montego Bay, JMU students participated in the simple living philosophy and immersed themselves into a new culture while performing various tasks to support CUMI.
