Janey Goodman Selected as 2016 Senior CLASS Award Candidate

2016 Oct 28

Continuing her success on and off the court, senior right side hitter Janey Goodman of Powhatan was selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award for collegiate volleyball.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Goodman is one of two student-athletes to represent the Colonial Athletic Association, joining Hofstra's Hannah Klemm, and epitomizes the definition of an all-around student-athlete.

In the classroom, the senior is on track to earn her degree in kinesiology with a concentration in physical and health education. The Powhatan, Va. native hopes to earn her master's degree in education with dreams of teaching elementary physical education while coaching varsity volleyball. Academically, Goodman has received JMU Athletics Director Scholar-Athlete Award and is a two-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award, while earning a spot on JMU's Dean's list twice in her career.

Goodman has risen into the leadership role as one of four seniors on the team and has evolved into a shining example of a leader on and off the court for her teammates. The right side hitter is animated on the court, sharing the highs and lows with her squad and is the first to take responsibility for poor performance and rally her team together to battle through adversity. If asked, Goodman would be the first to trade away any individual accolades for a team championship. In victory and defeat, it is a challenge to find Goodman without a smile on her face.

With her teammates, Goodman has been involved with numerous service projects over her time with the Dukes. The team has welcomed Special Olympians to participate during pre-game activities and will be raising awareness for pediatric cancer by working with Go For the Goal to organize a Lace Up For Pediatric Cancer Awareness match this season.

Goodman has solidified herself as one of the most prolific Dukes in program history and has led James Madison to three CAA tournament appearances, reaching the semifinals on two occasions. Goodman holds the JMU single-season record for attempts (1,255 in 2015), while ranking in the top 10 in single-season kills and kill average. The right side hitter currently ranks third all-time at JMU in kills (1,441), third in kills average (3.63 per set) and attack attempts (3,824) and sixth in block assists (295). The reigning CAA Player of the Year is also a three-time All-CAA selection and was named to the 2015 AVCA All-East Coast Region Team.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballots. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
