Katherine Farmer of Richmond, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Katherine Farmer of Richmond spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Farmer, a sophomore marketing major, traveled to Orlando, Fla. to volunteer at Heart of Florida United Way.

While in Florida the students worked on a variety of daily projects aimed to help people in need in Orlando. Projects ranged from painting, playing with kids, cooking, serving food, tutoring, building and more. The students lived on a $6 a-day budget and truly got to experience a different way of life while seeing the world in a different light.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
