Kayla Greer of Chesapeake, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Kayla Greer of Chesapeake spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Greer, a junior sports and recreation management major, traveled to Chacraseca, Nicaragua to volunteer at Nicaragua Project.

Cosponsored by the Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence, the students on this trip helped to build a house for a local family. The group also practiced “simple living” where each group member only brought one backpack each and used their checked baggage to pack donations and other supplies for the people of Chacraseca.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
