Megan Richards of Rouses Point, NY Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Megan Richards of Rouses Point spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Richards, a sophomore communication sciences and disorder major, traveled to Los Angeles, Calif. to volunteer at AIDS Project Los Angeles.

APLA is a nonprofit organization located in the heart of Los Angeles county that is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by AIDS disease, reducing the incidence of HIV infection and advocating for fair and effective HIV-related public policy. While in Los Angeles, the students worked with those affected by HIV/AIDS by providing a wealth of services from oral health to running the four food pantries across the area.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
