Meredith Byrne of Ambler Participates in Alternative Spring Break Trip

2015 Mar 24

Ambler, PA resident Meredith Byrne spent spring break serving others through James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break Program. Byrne, a sophomore Psychology major, traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to volunteer with Project Lazarus.

The student-led ASB trips took place from March 7-14. Each trip focused on a social issue, such as homelessness, resettlement, environmentalism or community wellness, in a specific region. Almost 300 students embarked on 23 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.

New Orleans is the home of the 5th largest population of people living with HIV/AIDS. Project Lazarus is a non-profit organization that serves New Orleans and the surrounding areas by providing housing and support for those with the disease. During the week, JMU students got to know the residents and assisted with everything from facilitating fun activities to tending the gardens, while learning about this significant social issue.
