Rachel Petri of Charlottesville, VA Spent Spring Break Serving Others

2013 Mar 11

Rachel Petri of Charlottesville spent spring break serving others as part of James Madison University's Alternative Spring Break program. Petri, a sophomore interdisciplinary liberal studies major, traveled to Los Angeles, Calif. to volunteer at LA's Best.

LA’s Best is an organization that works with at-risk youth, ages five to 12. JMU students helped promote a fun and safe environment for the children and participated in after-school programs. During the morning students worked at the Los Angeles Mission, a homeless shelter that provides for the poor, works to restore the addicted and addresses homelessness.

The student-led ASB trips, scheduled for March 2-9, are each based on a social issue such as homelessness, environmentalism or community wellness. Over 300 students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spend the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group.
