Thomas Calhoun of Fairfax earns scholarship to study abroad

Thomas Calhoun of Fairfax has received a $20,000 Boren Scholarship to study Chinese in China this summer.

Calhoun is a Senior at James Madison University and is majoring in Intelligence Analysis and International Affairs.

He is among 161 recipients of the award nationwide and one of two from JMU. Nearly 950 students applied for the scholarship.

The Boren Scholarship provides $20,000 to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. The scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP).

University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren is the principal author of the legislation that created the National Security Education Program and the Boren Awards, the scholarships and fellowships that bear his name.
