Westhampton Beach Resident Derek Guzman Presented at National Geology Meeting

2012 Nov 8

Derek Guzman, a Junior geology major from Westhampton Beach, presented research at the Geological Society of America's 2012 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Charlotte, NC.

Guzman, a student at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., presented a poster on " Evidence For a Two-Stage Eruption At Trimble Knob An Eocene Knob, An Eocene Volcanic Plug in Highland County, VA."

Guzman's presentation will encompass the mechanisms of eruption at Trimble Knob. He analyzed two contact zones between different rock types within the volcano as well as the contact zone between two basement rock units below the volcano.

To Guzman, geology is an incredibly practical major. Understanding Earth processes is vital in the efforts to continue to accommodate a growing population and the growing needs of each citizen.

The conference was held from Sunday, Nov. 4 to Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Charlotte Convention Center. More information about geology at JMU is available at http://www.jmu.edu/geology/index.shtml.
