Originally scheduled to be held the first week of June at the American Wind Energy Association's CLEANPOWER conference in Denver, the competition was moved online due to COVID-19 and was held via webinar on May 20, June 2, June 3 and June 17.

Students in the James Madison University Brass Band performed onstage with the Cory Band, the world's top brass band ensemble. This performance marked the first time the JMU Brass Band has played onstage with Cory Band at the Forbes Center. The two bands have performed onstage together two other times: at the 2017 Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) Brass Band Festival in Manchester, England, and during a concert tour of England and Wales by the JMU Brass Band in 2008. The South Wales-based Cory Band played at the Forbes Center in February 2016, when the JMU Brass Band had an opportunity to work with them.

Halloween week at the Forbes Center featured a cast of 12 female students in the James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance's production of Vinegar Tom, a masterpiece of feminist theatre by Caryl Churchill. One of the most important and decorated contemporary playwrights, Churchill pushed gender boundaries by advocating for females in lead roles when she entered the British theatre scene in the early 1970s.

Broadway veteran Jacob Brent made his debut as faculty director, along with students, in the James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance's Shakespeare musical Twelfth Night, at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.
